1. About the dish

Onion Tomato Chutney is a spicy relish for idly/dosa, tastes best and remain in room temperature for two days. This recipe has many combination and method in preparing, the chutney I have posted here, is my version. I have prepared with the red capsicum as it enhance the flavor and give color to the chutney/relish and its totally optional.

2. Preparation time

The time taken to cut the veggie is about 2 minutes.

3. Cooking time

The cooking time take around 10 minutes for saute' and 2 minutes to grind to the chutney/relish.

4. Ingredient

The ingredient listed below can serve up to 2 people.

  1. Onion            - 1 medium size chopped 
  2. Tomato          - 1 small size chopped
  3. Red chili        -  5 to 6
  4. Urid dhal        - 1 tablespoon
  5. Chana dhal     - 1 tablespoon
  6. Capsicum       -  1/4 medium size chopped
  7. Salt

For seasoning

  1. Sesame oil     - 1 tablespoon
  2. Mustard seed  - 1/4 teaspoon
  3. Urid dhal        - 1/4 teaspoon
  4. Curry leaf


5. Preparation

1. Take a pan or kadai, add one tea spoon of oil and start adding one tablespoon of urid dhal and one table spoon of chana dhal. Let the dhal get roasted well.

2. Once dhal turns golden brown, transfer it to a bowl. Now to the same pan or kadai, add one roughly chopped onion, tomato and capsicum to it , and sauté it for 2 minutes on medium flame.

3.Wait till the veggie get roasted or cooked, now transfer the veggie to the bowl.

4. Let all the veggie and roasted dhal get cool, and transfer the same to the mixer bowl and grind to a paste.  


5. Now add salt to it.

6. Take a pan or kadai, for tempering 1 table spoon of sesame oil, add 1/4 teaspoon of mustard seed, 1/4 teaspoon of urid dhal, and some curry-leaf and add these tempering to the prepared chutney/relish.

7. Now chutney is ready to served.
